Experiencing Intercourse

...and other small towns in Pennsylvania Dutch Country.

We headed out to Lancaster today and through Fertility to Smoketown and the Good n' Plenty Restaurant, (where David came before when he was an intern in D.C.) We ate, family style at a long table, with a nice couple from Baltimore. They were very helpful and kind with our little boys, as was our amazing waitress! The fried chicken, mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, corn, peas, lemon pie, sherbet, ice cream (and more!) were divine.

Next, we drove to Bird-in-Hand (named after the picture on an early tavern sign) where we visited a gift shop and took a horse-drawn buggy tour through Amish and Mennonite farmland. We were taken to an actual Amish farm where we saw a lovely tree in the yard where the sons had built themselves a tree house, a dairy barn complete with cows, and a young, beautiful, modestly-dressed Amish girl offering us some of their home-made wares. We saw a farmer out cutting hay, his mower pulled by 4 mules. The farms were just beautiful, very neat and so nicely kept. Our Amish driver, Aaron, was very kind and answered all of our questions. William and Jonathan LOVED their ride. William was constantly excited about the white horse pulling the buggy, and Jonathan hung out the windows exclaiming about all the cows and horses and such.

After the buggy ride, we visited a local market to get some fresh fruit and cider to bring home!

We moved on to Intercourse...where we went by a lot of neat shops.

Then, on our way back through Bird-in-Hand, we stopped by an Amish farm for some homemade root beer! Yay!

(By the by, if you think Intercourse is an interesting name for a town, the town's original name was Cross-eyed.)

Nice attention grabbing post title. Sounds fun! I can't decide whether I'm more jealous of the countryside views or the yummy-sounding food. :)

I loved your post title too... so funny! Kyle and I loved your pictures. Kyle went on his mission to Pennsylvania, so he has told me lots of stories about the Amish. It sounds like you've had fun:)
